Which End Is Which?

In many aspects, Levi has always been an odd sleeper.  For example, his nap and nighttime habits are well, quite needy and he is not partial to sleeping for very long or by being by himself.  Every time he wakes, it seems like sleeping was the most traumatic thing to have happened to him.  I'm not sure why he isn't a lover of sleep.  But, in the last few months, he has gotten better at night for which I am immensely grateful.  I honestly don't mind getting up at night with him, it's some extra smushy cuddle time that we get to have together.  But during the hourly wake up nights, I tried to be positive by saying, "Well, I get more time with my baby compared to other moms whose kids are sleeping."  Even though it might not be the kind of time you think of, it's time with my child and I had to try to be positive while being exhausted!

 So which end is which?

Levi has always loved things smushed up to his face, especially when he's tired or sleeping.  He smashes books against his face, lotion bottles, blankets, me, anything.  He put them against his face and then leaves them there and kicks and kicks or lays in wait until we uncover him.  Then it all begins again.  While he sleeps, he has always loved having his blanket by his face and we were always concerned about him smothering himself or something.  But, what can you do when this is how your child sleeps.  Let them sleep, I say!  I still frequently check him, even though I'm sure he's fine since he can move on his own.  Now that he's rolling around, he's sleeping on his tummy now and now loves his face smushed into the mattress.  This kid, goodness.  I think it's hilarious finding him sleeping in odd positions.  But lately he's been sleeping in a strange tummy, leg out position, just like me...and his Grandpapa.  :)

A Few of Levi's Favorite Things

Levi loves a lot of things, but here are a few of his favorite things in life right now.

He loves being with daddy and watching him and listening to him and laughing at him and...everything about daddy.  Here they are getting ready for the Packer game.  Levi is wearing his Packer slippers that I gave Jon when I found out I was pregnant.

In my previous post you may have read that Levi is actually not a huge fan of sleep (in fact he just woke up from one of his famous 20 minute naps).  But he is a huge fan of sleep when Mama is also taking a rest and he gets cuddles.  He definitely lives up to the meaning of his name, "clings to".  I think he has such a different look when he is sleeping; what an extra cute boy!

"Could I please have some privacy, please?!"
Levi loves his baths!  I wrote about this in the summer as well, but his infatuation with water has not decreased one bit.  Sometimes he will be getting tired and cranky and when I bring him up for bath time, he cheers right up and kicks his chunky legs in excitement.

Levi loves to eat!  Most of all, he of course loves Mama milk.  But now that he's starting a few solids, he has really enjoyed tasting great foods.

Levi also loves to swing!  We get outside whenever we get a chance and thankfully we have a cute park nearby.

Half-Birthday Boy

Well, this little munchkin is already 6 months!  Whoa!
I just can't believe how the time has passed!  Although there were so many times when I thought, "This will never end!  He will always be doing this or he will never be able to do this!"  Well, we've moved past a lot of these things that I was so frustrated about.  All, but maybe his sleep.  Levi is just so ready for what the world has for him that he's not much of a sleeper.  His naps are quite brief and although the first part of his nighttime sleep has recently been consistently longer, his 2am and beyond is generally hourly.  He apparently just wants to be with his Mama...thanks Levi, I feel the love, kinda.  Thankfully I have had great friends and family to give me advice, support, and breaks when I needed it.  Some friends and family have also watched Levi so Jon and I could  coordinate these breaks and go out on dates.  Woohoo!  Thank you for thinking of us and taking care of Levi!

Levi's personality is starting to come through in bits and pieces and we love to see more of who he is.  We already know he is very serious about all his baby work, is curious and loves to explore, loves watching his Papa and Molly, and loves to smile and bat his eyes at others in his bashful way.  Oh, also, we have learned that he is quite ticklish like Mama.  He has quite the belly laugh.  I can't wait to learn more about him.  I think it's so fascinating to watch him see and explore things that he's never seen before in his life or to try to figure out what an object is like.  I can see this kid being a tinkerer in the future.  Better hide all the electronics and anything that can be taken apart!  No, I love this side of him.  I am so thankful every day to be able to be home with Levi and not have to miss out on all his growth and playtime.  Thinking about only spending a few hours a day with him is an awful thought to me.  Even though it was at first frustrating and a little odd how things played out in my decision to not go back to work, I can see how God was also working and I am thankful.  Of course, I do miss teaching, my coworkers, and the kids, but I have been able to visit and it's always wonderful to see them and have an exciting greeting.

Levi and I still enjoy taking walks outside, even though it has gotten cooler.  Thankfully Molly is donning her winter coat and Levi can get bundled up as well.

Love my little boy!  So thankful for my days home with him.

I am hoping to do some more blogging, but recently I have had problems with time...as well as uploading my pics from my phone.  Apparently, Android and Mac do not love each other.   Bear with me.

3 month Levi

Our lovely little Levi is 3 months as of yesterday!  I am loving this stage that he has grown into.  He is so playful, talkative, and aware of his surroundings compared to even a few weeks ago.  He loves cooing and talking with Jon and I.  It seems that especially when Jon hangs out with Levi, Levi just has so many important things to say.  Jon also loves how he is growing more interactive and not just sleeping and eating and hanging out quietly anymore!  As you can see below, he has the cutest smile that just lights up his entire face.  He has sparkly "light bright" eyes like his papa and often shrugs his shoulders in a coy little way.  To make him even cuter, he will often do my favorite move-the Hubba Hubba eyebrows and smirk.

Morning time with Mama is still the best!

I was so thankful to be able to hang out with two childhood friends Amanda and Betsy and all our new boys!  We all had a son within the last year and it was great to spend time together catching up and introducing our boys.

As promised, here are some pictures from the beach as well as the Brewer's game.
My beautiful boy; I love him so much!

Cuddling with Papa on the beach.

There's always lots of love to give!

Ginny being so gentle with her new cousin.

Enjoy Levi's chatty time!

2 month reflections

At 2 months, Levi was:
15.7 lbs 97 percentile,  23.5 in. 70 percentile

We are coming up on Levi's 3rd month birthday, so I figured I better put some pictures up about our time during his second month!  I can't believe he is almost three months, this time has flown by.  With the crazy transition in the first month and adjustment to nights, the time goes by so quickly.  I have loved the time I've been given to be home with Levi; it has been such a blessing.  Below are a few things we have been doing during the last month.

Alternative tummy time.  Sometimes we like to change it up a bit.
Notice his cute little cloth diaper.

This little chubby boy is the cutest, isn't he?  His most smiley time is in the mornings, which makes getting up early so much easier.  I love knowing that when I go to get him he's full of smiles and ready to make faces with mama.

Bath time is always fun!

Although you can't tell in this picture, we are at Levi's first music class!  It is a fun Rhyme and Rhythm Laptime class where we have fun singing and playing with other little ones.   We do a lot of singing and dancing together at home, but it's nice to have a little class to go to and learn some more!

In early July, I was so thankful to be able to go to my parents with Levi.  My dad was wonderful and drove us up north so that we could brave Levi's first long drive more easily.  On July 4th, we went to a Mennonite store and fair and found lots of fun things and tasty foods!  I loved being in the northwoods.  One of my favorite moments was nursing Levi at 5:30am while watching the sunrise over the lake.  I could definitely get used to that morning view!

On our way up north, we stopped by my brother's house and he got to meet Levi!  I was very happy for them to meet and hang out a little more later during the weekend. We were also excited for Ginny and Levi to meet each other.  We have some cute pictures of them together that we'll add later.

Levi's first Brewer's Baseball game.  Extra bonus: the Italian sausage won the race and the Brewers won the game!

Last week, Jon and I celebrated our 6th anniversary!  Wow, time has also gone by fast for us as a couple.  We spent the day at church, relaxing at home, and then picnicking on a beach on Lake Michigan.  It was such a fun time and Levi got to stick his feet in the big lake.  Jon took some nice pictures with our other camera, so I'll try to add some on in another post.  I am so thankful for Jonathon and that God blessed me with such a wonderful man.  I look forward to many more years of love and adventure with our family.

Levi has learned to like his Bumbo chair from his Aunt Kari since he has more control over his head.  Jon and I have had a fun time playing with him while he sits in it.  I love those Bumbo seats!

I just love this smirk of his, don't you!  I keep giving my own captions as to what he's thinking.  Levi is also practicing sitting in his Exersaucer even though he can't do much in it yet, he seems to like it.  Since he loves to kick and move his feet so much this will soon be a great toy for him; thanks mom and dad!

With the high heat this week, we haven't been taking our normal walks.  So instead, we have been  hanging by the "pool".  Levi has loved being in the bath and kicking, kicking, kicking!  My cheeks hurt from smiling so much during these times.

Levi got to meet the family that I have babysat for the last few years, so fun!

Little Fisher

Here's a little video that I caught early this morning.  Levi started doing a circle motion with his right hand and so I joked with my dad about him practicing his reeling for fishing.  You can even catch a little smile or two in the video as well!

I have been noticing today that Levi has also been smiling more when reacting to things I do.  For example this afternoon I was making cow moo's at him and talking about animals and many times he would smile after I moo'd!  I tested it to make sure it wasn't a fluke, so little by little he's showing his personality.  That little smile just melts your heart so quickly!

So chunky, so smoochable, and so peaceful!  As you can see, he's been working on finding his thumb.

Bottle Day

Jon and I had been planning on having Levi try a bottle soon, but today was a perfect opportunity.  We had just gotten home from an outing to Costco and a walk in a forest preserve and Levi was fussy and hungry.  I had heard how fussy babies can be when trying a bottle for the first time and how even if they smell mama nearby, it can be a horrible distraction.  So, I gave Jon some tips and handed the bottle and Levi off to him and started to make my way out of the room so I wouldn't be a distraction.  Well, apparently Levi did not care at all because he took that bottle right away like it was nothing!  It didn't even phase him and never once unlatched.  The bottle only had 2 oz. in it and within about 2 minutes (no joke) he had guzzled it down.  Jon was shocked at how fast he ate.  I wasn't.  I'm telling you, this kid chugs his meals!  No wonder he gets fussy from gas.  I try to calm and slow him down, but this kid likes his food, I'm telling you!  After he had his bottle, he was ready for more and so that's where I came back into the picture.  Jon did a good job and it was a fun moment to have him feed Levi his first meal without me.  But, on the other hand, it was a little sad as well since he has only really needed me.  Overall though, this is good for everyone.  Jon gets some special bonding time, Levi gets some time with papa, and I gain a little independence if I want it.

Like I said in Levi's one month update, one activity we usually do in the morning is time on his play mat.  He loves kicking his feet which make the posts rattle.

We also spend some tummy time on his mat and he really doesn't seem to mind it, especially when he falls asleep during tummy time!  If I allowed him to be a tummy sleeper, I honestly think he'd sleep much better overall.
His doctor was impressed by how strong and big he is in general.  But during his check-up he was on his tummy and pushing himself up with his arms.  I caught him doing this the week prior to his appointment and he was 4 weeks.

He is just the cutest and so loveable, isn't he?

1 month

Alright, so my little hunk is now one month old, can you believe it!  When I think back on this month, most of it seems like a blur of nursing, changing diapers, calming a screaming baby, and trying to get some sleep-rinse and repeat.  But, the last few days have been seeming a little more normal and I have been less zombie-like.  Jon even let me go out of the house on my own to Target, what freedom!  But, within 40 minutes, I was missing my Levi and wanted to be back home again.  Thankfully Jonathon has been home more since he is no longer working nights and will now have a normal sleeping and waking schedule.  He has been a great help to us and I am very thankful to have him around.
There's so many things I could share about the last month, but I could never condense nor organize my thoughts of them.  So, I'll just give some updates.  After the birth and surgery, I was very thankful to have my mom stay with us for two weeks.  Since Jon was working a lot of hours and I was not very mobile nor could I lift Levi for the first week, I needed the extra help.  It was an extra sweet time for my mom and I to be together and for me to learn from her.  I could not have survived those first few weeks without her.  But, I also could not have survived without my Jonathon and his emotional support as I was quite emotional and still frustrated and hurt about the change in the birth.  I'm so glad to have gotten over most of these feelings being so heavy on me, but they still come back and it is still hard.  Levi, though, has been doing marvelously!  He is such a great little eater and is always so expressive with his eyes, eyebrows, and mouth.  Jon and I say that he has his papa's looks and his mama's personality.  He tends to be extra cuddly and lovey and when he's not being loved on is generally why he gets upset.  Levi and I enjoy spending our days going for walks, singing and dancing, reading, playing on his play mat, and napping (of course).

I just can't get enough of this picture; he's so handsome! Don't you wonder what he's thinking?

Here are a few of our other favorite pictures from our friend.

When Levi turned one month old, we went to his first church service and he did great!  Jon got to show him to some of the pastors and our friends, so we were both happy to finally be back at church.  The day after, we went back to the botanic gardens where we were just a few days before he was born.  Take a look at the difference a few weeks can make!
It's truly hard to believe this guy grew inside of me and was there up until one month ago!

We have also had a few visitors of family and friends.  Thank you for coming and visiting us!

And here's our one month old!

Birth Plan Turned Upside Down

People tell you that you should write down your birth story so you won't forget such a miraculous moment.  I thought, "How could you forget such an amazing moment?"  Well, after two weeks, I can already tell that some of the minor details are starting to fade.  So, I better write this thing as best as I can!  Sorry ahead for the length of it!

To begin, I'll share with you the changes that occurred previous to Levi being born.  As many of you know, we had been planning all along on a natural birth.  We took Bradley classes and prepared and practiced all throughout the pregnancy for the big day.  Every day we got closer and closer to the due date, we got a little more excited and nervous for what was about to happen.  We so wanted to meet our little baby!  But, as we rounded the 40 week mark, we did an extra ultrasound and non-stress test to make sure baby was still doing fine.  All was good and the baby was still very healthy.  But when I met with my midwife, she realized that the ultrasound tech failed to give me the weight estimate on the baby.  She did what was my second internal in the last week and saw that I was not dilated at all, nor had the baby "dropped", but still high up in my belly.  Afterwards, she went and talked with the ultrasound tech and then sat me down.  This is where everything I had planned and prepared for the birth of our baby turned wildly upside down.  She started to explain that the tech did not have the measurements because our baby maxed out the measurements on the machine.  Which meant, he was estimating at 10+ pounds.  How often does this happen seriously?  Sorry, your baby is too big to be measured by our technology...Because of his size as well as him not dropping, they also had doubts about the size of my inner pelvis and whether or not he would even fit in a vaginal birth.  Because of this, my midwife explained that the only option was to do a cesarean.  Well, I tried to take a few breaths and then absolutely broke down crying because all I had worked so hard to do in the last ten months came crashing down in a big heap.  I did everything right, exercised regularly, ate healthily, attended birthing classes, practiced birthing and relaxation techniques, everything.  We had so wanted a natural birth that the idea of not having one was almost impossible to accept.  I asked about any other options or even induction, but because he was still so high, it would be dangerous for both of us.  If we were to be induced and if labor progressed, he could get stuck and they'd have to push him back in me to do an emergency C-section.  If his head made it out, but his shoulders were stuck, they might have to break his collar bone and cause very unnecessary damage.  Not to mention the damage that could be done on me...Obviously, we wanted what was best for the baby and I, but that doesn't mean we weren't grieved by what was happening.  Most of all, I felt as though they were telling me I was unable to perform one of the main purposes and privileges my body has as a woman: to give birth.  All my life, I have heard, "You have good birthing hips, you'll do great!"  But, this was not true.  Maybe my hips are fine, I don't know and we can't know until the next pregnancy and see if things are any different.

That night, Jon and I prayed a lot and called others to pray about the situation.  We also talked to our Bradley instructor and she gave us some ideas for a last shot with natural induction and she also was praying for us, which was so dear.  I think we tried about 9 different natural induction techniques and the next morning I woke up with what seemed like a small tear and my bag of waters had leaked.  So, we went back to the midwife and she checked me again and there was no progress and it seemed like the tear had repaired itself.  We had two more days until our scheduled cesarean and after a lot of crying, prayer, and talking with each other, we decided that it really was the best thing for us to have the cesarean and not to even put it off just to wait and see what would happen.  If we had waited longer, he would have gotten bigger and getting him out may have been even more of a problem.  Plus, the risks of possibly going into labor and him getting stuck and having to push him back in me or him hurting me inside was not worth the risk.  Those three days before his birth seemed like the longest days ever.  I had finally stopped working that Monday after my appointment, I was done, just done.  I knew I needed these few days before he was born and emotionally I was fried.  These days with Jonathon were also good for me and it was a special time of bonding during a difficult and yet soon to be happy time.

Skip ahead a few days of emotional ups and downs and we come to Thursday, May 2nd at 5:30am when I woke up to get ready to go to the hospital.  We arrived at the hospital at 6:30am to be prepped and ready for the surgery.  Surprisingly, I was quite calm about the whole thing, especially since I hate hospitals so much and I had been so worried the few days before.  Jon on the other hand, was quite concerned.  But while in the hospital waiting, we prayed and read the Bible together.  During this time at the hospital, I was having some decently intense regular contractions.  I had been having contractions for awhile without anything progressing, but it seemed like our baby was still trying to be born.  Also that morning, it seemed I had lost my mucus plug (sorry, I still hate that phrase).  So, between that and my contractions, my body was trying to work that baby out, but was getting nowhere.  My midwife asked if I wanted to be checked for dilation, but I didn't even care at that point.  Oh, huge blessing to have my midwife there!  Normally, I don't think they come to cesareans, but she was so disappointed in how things had changed that she wanted to support me.  And not only be there, but she said she and the nurses talked to "the powers that be" and made sure that the baby wouldn't be swept away from me right away and that I would be able to see the baby and nurse them as soon as they were done with me.  It was such a relief knowing that they had tried their best to give me some things that I had wanted.

Around 8:30, they took me into the operating room and separated me from Jon.  This is where I started to freak out.  I didn't have Jon to keep me calm, I didn't know what was going on, it was cold, and they were giving me an epidural.  My midwife quickly jumped in and grabbed my hand and I tried to remain calm.  I feel like my prayers were only one or two words during this time, I had nothing else but a few words.  After I was all prepped, they brought Jon in and started away.  They also ended up making the incision a little bigger because of the size of the baby.  Jon said he could see I was very scared but was trying to be brave.  I remember one point where they were pushing on my abdomen to get him out and I couldn't really breathe and Jon sang in my ear.  He knew what I needed and it helped.  When the OB looked inside of me, he noticed that the baby was also transverse, the head not straight on my pelvis but instead turned.  So, on top of every other issue, being slightly turned was also causing issues in the baby dropping into my pelvis.  No wonder I had such pain as the pregnancy progressed!  Soon after, they told Jon to stand up and take a picture because the baby was coming out of me.  Shockingly, he stood up and took a few pictures!  Then, at 9:10am, Jon got to announce that it was a boy!  Neither of us were surprised that it was a boy, we both felt like it was the whole time.  Then, Jon followed him to the warmer and helped shorten the cord and get him cleaned up.  Dr. Levy asked, "What are you going to name your little linebacker?" and we said, Levi Jonathon.  He responded, "Oh, I love when patients name their children after me!"  Obviously, his is said a little differently, but it was funny still.  Everyone in the OR was saying how big and gorgeous he was, that's all I kept hearing.  They finally weighed him and he was 9lbs. 15oz, just an ounce short of 10 pounds!  Dr. Levy's response was, "One more biscuit this morning and he would've been ten pounds."  He also said that even though my belly was huge, I was all baby and he was so shocked that I held the big guy in there!  After putting everything back in its place, he said I could have a regular birth, so long as my babies aren't ten pounds in the future.  Well, I don't know that that is too promising, so we'll have to wait and see until the next one comes along.  By 9:50, I was in the recovery room nursing Levi Jonathon.  Jon had been waiting there with him while they stitched and stapled me up and he said Levi was rooting around and very hungry.  An answer to prayer, Levi had no problem latching and eating was no problem for this big boy.

Well, that's it, from start to finish.  If you made it through that long story, great job!  There's a lot that's been going on since that time two weeks ago, but we have been loving having Levi in our lives and learning to be his parents. So, although I didn't feel like I had given birth the way I wanted to, I did give birth to a wonderful baby boy.  We are all so thankful that he is healthy and out safe with us and that's all that really matters!

Announcing the New "Little" Enger....

Levi Jonathon Enger
Born: Thursday, May 2nd at 9:10 am
9lbs. 15 ounces, 21 inches long

I love this beautiful boy more than I could ever express!  Jonathon and I are loving being his parents and feel so blessed that God gave him to us. Right now, we are adjusting to being home and enjoying his extra special presence in our life.  Later, I will share a little more about how he was born, as it was in an unexpected way than we had planned. He is a big love and we see him being a great combination of both Jonathon and I.  We look forward to sharing more about him with you!  Thank you for your prayers in this whole pregnancy and beyond!
